The Baltimore premiere of Brad Fraser's masterful play POOR SUPER MAN was one of the catalysts for the creation of Funkopolis. A tale of sexual intrigue and the blurring lines of sexuality in modern culture, the production swept Baltimore's theatre awards in its month-long, sold out run. The provocative and brave presentation of sexual identity made the production a hot-button topic, including editorials in the Baltimore Sun and an opening-night stakeout by the Baltimore City Police.

  • In the play's 1994 world premiere in Cincinnati, the play was shut down due to its controversial nature. It was later named one of the 10 Best Plays of the Year by Time magazine.
  • The Funkopolis production used a great deal of popular music, including songs by The Cocteau Twins, Me'Shell NdegeOcello, Deacon Blue, Tricky, and Nine Inch Nails.
  • Although their gay love scenes were staged faithfully (making them quite popular in certain circles), actors Jason Tinney and Justin Skinner are heterosexual...a fact that many audience members simply refused to believe.
  • Jason Tinney and Damion Clark were the first people to formulate the idea of Funkopolis.
  • Where are they now? You can find Jason Tinney at the center of the award-winning Irish roots band Donegal X-Press, while Damion Clark pursues his doctorate in Atlanta. Justin Skinner is the Artistic Director of Thundersmith Industries.
  • Brad Fraser is directing a film of this play, due for Canadian release in 2002. The title will be changed due to copyright issues, probably to "Dead Super Heroes".

Poor Super Man was our first collaboration with the noted photographer and graphic artist Jose Villarrubia, who designed the poster and publicity images for both this production and 3 Stories To The Ground. His work is absolutely stunning; check out a Google Search on him to see the breadth of his talent and ability. This is a photo taken from the first photo shoot Jose did for the show. From these and about seven other photos, he created the amazing trio composite that became the signature poster of Poor Super Man.
