“In 1964, almost 70% of Americans voted in the Presidential election between Johnson and Goldwater.  By 1996, that number dropped to a historic low of 54%, and the 2000 election recorded even lower voter turnout.  Census Bureau surveys indicate individuals do not vote because they are “too busy”, “not interested”, or simply “didn’t like the candidates.”

As we approach what many consider to be one of the most important elections in recent history, Pressing the Flesh roots itself in the world of escalating apathy and cynicism and asks why an increasing number of American citizens simply choose not to participate in the Democracy that we all celebrate as Americans.

In the spirit of Anna Deveare-Smith and Tectonic Theatre Project, Funkopolis aims its unique style of physical theatre at ALL in the political arena, and no one is safe!  What makes a "career politician" and why do we hate them?  Pressing the Flesh pursues exploration from all sides of the issue in a uniquely entertaining and provocative performance.”

  • PRESSING THE FLESH marks the debut of Funkopolis to the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and we are incredibly excited about the opportunity.  The ensemble had initially been invited to attend in 1999, but were unable to, due to schedule and production conflicts.  Nothing stands in the way this time out, however, and we’re looking forward to it!
  • Funkopolis has always been creative in its efforts to fundraise for its various productions.  For this show, however, Artistic Director Tim Brown volunteered his time and efforts in a new way – by running a “Virtual Run-A-Thon” from his home in Allentown, PA to the steps of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA – a total of 59.7 staggering miles.  FOLLOW HIS JOURNEY AND SUPPORT THE EFFORT BY VISITING THE “POUNDING THE PAVEMENT” page.
  • The “flesh” seen in much of the marketing material for PTF actually belongs to one Gail Okunski Brown, who has often given the shirt off her back for Funkopolis.  This marks the first time, however, we left the shirt behind and opted for what was beneath it!
